This pilgrimage is one of a few that truly explores the wild, north plateau country of the Changtang. More than half the walking time of this journey is spent north of the great Nyenchen Tanglha range- the watershed of the Tsangpo that effectively divides the inhabitant valleys of Tibet's main river from the Changtang. Here is the sacred Bonpo territory of Mt Targo and Lake Dangra, which lies within the seldom visited Tibetan district of Naktsang. This unparalleled combination of one of the largest lakes of Tibet with the haunting magnificence of the high snow-capped range makes this area one of the most superb in the country. Here is a world unknown to outsiders. Much wildlife still abounds and, during the latter half of the trek, there will be plenty of opportunity to come into close contact with it. The climate, however, is notoriously severe and changeable; ideally, this itinerary should only be attempted within couple of narrow windows during the summer months.
